Database Security Expert Sentrigo Announces Protection for Widely Used Oracle 8.1.7

15 August 2007

Also Expands Platform Support to Include Oracle 11g and
Oracle Databases in AIX Environments, Protecting Them
Against Threats from Insiders and Hackers

WOBURN, Mass.—August 15, 2007—Sentrigo, Inc., an innovator in database security software, today announced that its Hedgehog product now supports the final version of Oracle Database 8i, Oracle 8.1.7, and is available for download from Sentrigo’s website. By offering support for this popular version of the market’s dominant database, Sentrigo provides software-based security against hackers and privileged insiders alike.
Oracle 8.1.7 is no longer supported by Oracle with security patches, leaving database administrators and information security professionals with few options for defending resources that contain sensitive information. Sentrigo will also support Oracle Database 11g, the newest version of the product, which was made available earlier this week for Linux.
Also today, Sentrigo announced expanded operating system support for Hedgehog. The product now supports Oracle databases running on IBM AIX, in addition to existing support for Sun Solaris, Red Hat Linux and SUSE Linux.
“Many companies are still using Oracle 8.1.7 because it meets their business and technical requirements,” said Jerald Murphy, director of research operations for the Robert Frances Group. “Yet Oracle is no longer providing patches for the product, so it’s vulnerable to existing and new, undetected threats. This is an unrecognized yet very real security issue for organizations. IT executives should look for solutions that address this vulnerability in order to protect their critical business systems.”
Sentrigo created Hedgehog to defend databases against unauthorized use by company insiders—who present the greatest threat to sensitive data stores—such as database administrators, consultants and developers, as well as hackers. The product can be downloaded and installed in a matter of minutes to monitor all database transactions and, when configured by the database administrator to do so, terminate database sessions. Additionally, Hedgehog’s unique virtual patching ability immediately protects the database against vulnerabilities that have been discovered, but not yet patched.
Hedgehog is available in two versions for download, Enterprise and Standard, the latter of which may be used indefinitely free of charge.
“Sentrigo is rapidly building out database and OS support,” said Dan Sarel, vice president of products at Sentrigo. “We’re looking ahead to Oracle 11g, but at the same time are cognizant that there are still thousands of Oracle 8i deployments around the world that are virtually unprotected against new threats. This release gives database administrators a fast, highly effective way to address the problem with no impact on database performance.”
